Good Morning, Justin!
While we’re all dreaming of the 6–7 trend finally ending (if you know, you know 😉), the kids seem determined to keep it alive. But let’s shift gears—Thanksgiving is here, the holiday shopping lists are calling, and the Elf on the Shelf is back in action. Get ready for festive fun, a little chaos, and all the holiday magic!
THE DIGEST

Happy Thanksgiving, Justin!
Wishing everyone a warm, cozy, stretchy-pants-required Thanksgiving! As you gear up for the big feast, here are a few friendly reminders to keep your holiday running smoother than your electric carving knife:
Turkey Thawing 101
Thaw in the fridge: 24 hours for every 4–5 pounds
(If you just pulled a frozen turkey out today… we believe in miracles.)No thawing on the counter — we’d prefer your guests leave with leftovers, not food poisoning.
Safe Cooking Temps
Turkey: 165°F
Stuffing: 165°F
Precooked Ham: 140°F
Fresh Ham: 145°F + 3-minute rest
(Yes, even your ham needs a nap.)
A quick heads-up: many stores and City Hall will be closed Thursday, so plan that “oops, we forgot the cranberry sauce” trip ahead of time. And if you still don’t have dinner plans, peek at last week’s newsletter for local spots serving Thanksgiving meals — because sometimes outsourcing the cooking is the greatest blessing of all.
Thanksgiving Football: Because Naps Need Background Noise
Football and Thanksgiving are practically family. Whether you’re basting, baking, or pretending to “check the turkey” while sneaking a quiet moment, here’s when to tune in:
Game 1 – Detroit Lions vs. Green Bay Packers
Kick off the day with the 23rd Thanksgiving showdown between these classic rivals.
Time: 1:00 p.m. ET (12:00 p.m. CT)
Watch on: FOX
Streaming: FOX streaming options, Tubi, NFL+, major live-TV providers
Game 2 – Dallas Cowboys vs. Kansas City Chiefs
Patrick Mahomes plays his first-ever Thanksgiving game — perfect for your mid-afternoon snack break.
Time: 4:30 p.m. ET (3:30 p.m. CT)
Watch on: CBS
Streaming: Paramount+, NFL+, major live-TV providers
Game 3 – Baltimore Ravens vs. Cincinnati Bengals
Wind down the night with Lamar Jackson’s Thanksgiving debut — ideal for a post-dessert food coma.
Time: 8:20 p.m. ET (7:20 p.m. CT)
Watch on: NBC
Streaming: Peacock, NFL+, major live-TV providers
May your turkey be juicy, your pies plentiful, your naps uninterrupted, and your Wi-Fi strong enough to stream all three games.
Happy Thanksgiving, Justin!

Finding Calm in the Holiday Chaos
Are you feeling a sprinkle of the holiday season stress? Does it feel overwhelming to balance all your commitments this time of year? Grateful Heart Counseling offers therapy for adults, teens, and children in Justin (and Denton) to help lighten your mental load.
Here are some simple ways to increase feelings of calm for those feeling a sprinkle of the holiday season stress:
Take a moment to inhale deeply and see if you can identify all the different scents in the dish you’re cooking
Take the dog on a walk around the block, leave your phone at home
Use that lotion or body wash with the calming scent you just love
Listen to a favorite song or have a solo dance party
Send a text to a friend who gets it
Squeeze an ice cube over the sink and watch it melt
Notice all the red things in the room, then all the triangles, then all the sparkly things, etc.
Remember that this season will pass. You’ve likely survived much harder things. If you need support, reach out today. https://www.gratefulheartcounseling.com/

LOCAL HISTORY
From Mayor to Founder: The Impact of Alford Leo Adams on Northwest ISD
Continuing our series on the first City Council and early political leaders of Justin, Alford Leo Adams wasn’t just a mayor — he was a pillar of the community and a key player in shaping Northwest ISD from the very beginning. As one of the district’s founding members, he served on the first Northwest ISD school board right alongside V.R. Eaton. The Adams and Eaton families became so close that their bond continues today, making the naming committee’s recommendation of “Adams” a meaningful nod to both family legacy and the new middle school’s location near Eaton High School.
It’s also worth noting just how impactful that first elected leadership group was: the highest-voted alderman, Wayne A. Cox, now has a school named after him in Roanoke, and the second-highest-voted alderman, Alford Leo Adams, has a school named in his honor in Haslet. Their early service helped shape Northwest ISD in ways still visible today.
Serving more than 10 years as Justin’s mayor, Mr. Adams played a huge role in forming Northwest ISD in 1948, when the school districts of Haslet, Justin, Rhome, and Roanoke came together. He even made several trips to Austin to meet with legislators and help secure the district’s creation.
Mr. Adams went on to serve multiple terms on the Northwest ISD Board of Trustees — including time as board president — guiding the district through its early years. Without his leadership, the district as we know it might not exist today.
Outside of public service, Mr. Adams owned the Justin Lumber Company, where he built more than 300 structures throughout the area, from homes and churches to banks.
And the Adams–Eaton connection? It runs deeper than civic service. One of Mr. Adams’ daughters, Jeannine, married Roy Eaton, the son of V.R. Eaton — a fitting symbol of the close relationship between the two families and the two schools that now stand side-by-side.
