LOCAL HISTORY

History Spotlight: Towns That Time Forgot

Before 1880, several small towns around Justin began to grow right alongside it. But when the railroad chose Justin and Ponder for its route, many settlers packed up and moved to those booming new stops — leaving behind once-promising little communities.

Stony, Texas

Located about 8 miles northwest of Justin on Farm Road 2622, Stony was first settled in the late 1850s. The town even had its own post office from 1879 to 1918 and reached a peak population of about 130 residents.
Today, Stony is part of Ponder — but traces of its history remain. The old schoolhouse still stands, as does the Stony Cemetery.

Elizabethtown, Texas

About 8 miles from Justin, Elizabethtown was also settled in the 1850s. Early residents built churches, schools, and even a post office, naming the community after the nearby creek it bordered.
By 1880, however, Elizabethtown had disappeared from the Denton County tax rolls. While its buildings have long vanished, the cemetery still stands — now along a paved road. In 2021, Amazon built warehouses on the land where Elizabethtown once stood.
