LOCAL HISTORY

Spooky Spotlight: The Goatman’s Bridge – A Haunted Tale Near Justin

Just 14 miles from Justin sits a legendary landmark with a chilling reputation: the Old Alton Bridge. Built in 1884 to connect the former town of Alton to Denton, this rust-red iron crossing looks ordinary by daylight—but locals say it transforms after dark.

The bridge is the centerpiece of one of North Texas’ most enduring legends: the Goatman. For generations, visitors have whispered about glowing eyes in the woods, hoof-like footsteps on the planks, and an unseen presence that stalks late-night thrill-seekers. Some claim the spirit roams the timberline, angered by trespassers. Others tell of shadow figures, lost voices, and travelers who feel a sudden tug—as if something wants to pull them into the creek below.

Over time, a few stories have been embellished or debunked—like the infamous hanging tale—but the sightings and eerie encounters haven’t stopped. With so many firsthand accounts, it’s no surprise paranormal investigators and ghost tours still flock to the bridge each Halloween season.

Although no longer open to vehicles, Old Alton Bridge has been protected since 1988 and now sits on the National Register of Historic Places, preserving both its history and its haunting mystique.
