Texas Newcomer Tip Sheet: Fall & Winter in Justin, TX

Because “seasons” work a little differently around here…

Fall…ish Weather

If you’re dreaming of crisp fall mornings, bless your heart. In Justin, you’ll sweat at the football game and need a jacket for the bonfire that night.
Quick tips: Layer up, keep allergy meds handy (ragweed & cedar season), and don’t put away those shorts just yet — you’ll need them again soon.

Holiday Happenings

As fall fades, Justin gears up for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Local shops deck the halls, parades and markets pop up across town, and school and church events bring everyone together.

Storm Season Smarts

North Texas weather changes faster than a toddler’s mood. Storm seasons typically run March–June and again October–early December, bringing thunderstorms, hail, high winds, and sometimes tornado warnings.
Stay ready:
Know your safe spot, charge devices, avoid flooded roads, tie down outdoor furniture, and sign up for Denton County & City of Justin weather alerts.

Winter, Texas Style

Winter can’t make up its mind — grilling one day, frost scraping the next.
When snow hits, everything stops (and that’s okay). Watch for Blue Northers that can drop temps 40° fast.
Prep tips: cover faucets, drip pipes, bring pets and plants inside, and keep flashlights, blankets, and snacks handy for power flickers.

Garden & Yard Tips

Keep potted plants easy to move inside, water early, add mulch for insulation, and cover with old sheets (not plastic) on freezing nights.

Hunting Season Highlights

If you live near open or undeveloped land and hear gunshots, don’t be alarmed — it’s most likely hunters out enjoying the season.

Here’s what to know:

If you hunt, know your zones:

  • Deer: North Zone – Nov 1–Jan 4 | South Zone – Nov 1–Jan 18

  • Furbearers (skunks, raccoons, etc.): Open year-round — check local laws.

Always carry a Texas hunting license and written landowner permission.

Local Life Hacks

Traffic on 114 & 407 can double your drive — check before heading out. Add “train time.” Never pour hot water on a frozen windshield. And remember: if you don’t like the weather, wait 10 minutes.

Community Know-How

Trash and recycling can run late during holidays or icy weather. Coyotes, armadillos, and snakes are normal here — keep pets close.
And don’t forget: Texans wave. Always.

Trash and recycling pickup can sometimes run late around the holidays or during icy weather. Coyotes, armadillos, and the occasional snake are just part of life here in North Texas, so keep pets close and stay alert outdoors. And don’t forget: Texans wave. Always.

The Mayor and City Council members are also just a phone call away — or you can catch some of them at Friday morning breakfast at the Lonesome Spur. They’re always open to hearing your thoughts, whether it’s a concern, a compliment, or just some friendly conversation.

That’s small-town living at its best — neighbors who care, listen, and lend a hand.

When in Doubt…

Ask a local — we’re happy to help, whether it’s storm prep, brisket secrets, or how to wrap pipes with a pool noodle.
Keep your humor handy — the weather will test it, but the people will make you glad you’re here.

LOCAL HISTORY

Justin’s Turning Point: The 1946 Incorporation Vote

It was a chilly Thursday in Justin, Texas, when residents made a decision that would shape the town’s future forever. On November 7, 1946, citizens gathered to vote on whether Justin should officially become an incorporated city within the State of Texas.

Interestingly, this wasn’t just any election day. The regular election had taken place two days earlier, on November 5th, but a special election was called for November 7th with two important issues on the ballot. One was a state amendment allowing veterans to buy bonds to purchase privately owned land — a reflection of post-war priorities. The other was far closer to home: the vote to incorporate Justin.

The special election came about after residents petitioned a county judge, with strong backing from the Justin Community Chamber of Commerce, who saw incorporation as the next step in the town’s growth.

When the ballots were counted, 81 residents voted in favor, while 27 voted against — and just like that, Justin officially became a city. The decision also paved the way for a new local government, to include a Mayor, City Marshal, and five aldermen to lead the newly incorporated community.

Who would take on those first leadership roles and help shape the town’s beginnings? Stay tuned — there’s more to come on this defining chapter in Justin’s history.
