Summer Has Officially Landed in Justin & North Texas
It’s Memorial Day across Justin and the surrounding communities — a day to remember and honor those who gave their lives in service to our country, while also spending time with the people we care about most.
Around town, the pace feels a little slower today. Some local businesses are taking a well-earned break, while others are open serving up coffee, brunch, burgers, and sweet treats for families enjoying the long weekend. If you’re out and about, it’s a great day to support the hometown spots that keep our community thriving year-round.
Across North Texas, pools are opening, grills are firing up, and families are heading outdoors to soak in the unofficial start of summer. From backyard cookouts to lake days and neighborhood gatherings, it’s one of those weekends that reminds us how much community matters.
And here in Justin, there’s still excitement surrounding the final stretch of the Justin Spending Challenge — one last push to shop local, discover a new favorite spot, and celebrate the businesses that help make this town feel like home.
Whether today looks like a quiet morning on the porch, a family barbecue, or a day spent with friends, we hope it’s filled with gratitude, connection, and a little sunshine.

HISTORY

From Tornadoes to Town Maps: Historic May Moments in Justin
May is a significant month in Justin's history, filled with both important moments and events that shaped our town. Here are a few key highlights:
May 2, 1887: John Berry became the postmaster of "Justine," marking an important step in our town's growth.
May 5, 1887: This is the first time the name "Justin" appeared on an official government document. The first blueprint of the town, also known as the "Plat Map," was stamped with "Justin, Denton County, Texas".
Historical Figures: We also remember key figures in our town’s development, including:
W.P. Harmonson (Born May 29 1886), one of Justin's first settlers.
Dr. W.H. Pennington (Passed May 9 1940), our town’s first doctor.
Catastrophic Events: Over the years, May has brought some challenging weather to Justin, including:
A tornado on May 15, 1896.
Another tornado in early May 1900.
Flooding on May 26, 1908.
A fire on a passenger car on May 18, 1902.
From the official filing of our town’s plat to powerful storms and memorable figures, May has always been a month of change and remembrance in Justin's history.
