Good Morning, Justin and Neighbors!

Good morning, everyone! Happy Monday! Yes, we did lose an hour of sleep thanks to daylight savings—so if you feel a little groggy today, blame it on the clocks, not your coffee skills. But don’t worry… we also gained an extra hour of sunlight to soak up, so let’s call it a win for Vitamin D!

And hey, this week is extra lucky because St. Patrick’s Day is sneaking up on us. Time to channel your inner leprechaun, rock those green outfits, and maybe chase a rainbow (or at least some green donuts).

HISTORY

Alma Robinson Bishop: A Name Worth Remembering

Alma Robinson was born in 1890 and married William Ira Bishop in 1923. In many historical newspaper records, she is simply referred to as “Mrs. W. I. Bishop.” While that was common at the time, we believe it’s important to recognize her by her own name—Alma Bishop—and the many contributions she made to the Justin community.

Her parents were among the early pioneers of Denton County, moving from Alabama and settling in the Ponder area. In 1922, Alma and her husband began a cotton ginning business. For the next 31 years, she worked alongside him, keeping the books and helping supervise the operation—an impressive role at a time when few women were recognized for their work in business.

Even while helping run a successful business, Alma remained deeply involved in the community. She dedicated more than 41 years to the Justin Baptist Church as a Sunday School teacher. She also served on the Justin School Board for seven years, and was an active member of the PTA and FFA, supporting local students and education.

Following the passing of her husband in 1953, Alma continued her civic involvement. On July 4, 1955, she worked with the Justin Chamber of Commerce to help build and open a community park, which still exists today and was named in honor of her husband.

Her leadership and service extended well beyond Justin. Alma was active in the Denton County Federation of Women’s Clubs, served as Chairman of the American Homes Committee for the Second District of the Texas Federation of Women’s Clubs, and was a member of the Texas Ginners Association, Delta Kappa Gamma, and held a lifetime membership in the Home Economics Association.

For many years she was identified only as “Mrs. W. I. Bishop.” But her story shows that Alma Bishop was much more than a title—she was a businesswoman, educator, community leader, and dedicated volunteer whose impact on Justin and Denton County deserves to be remembered by name.
