HISTORY
Mrs. W.B. Harris: A Pioneer in Justin’s History
Alpha Ruth Sims, better known in history as Mrs. W.B. Harris, is a name that’s hard to find in the history books.
She was born in 1905 to Thomas Jefferson Sims. Her brother, Charlie Sims, was part of the first city council in Justin.
In 1925, Alpha married Walter Berry Harris, and they remained together until his death in 1970. They had one child, Walter Sims Harris.
Although we weren’t initially looking for her, Mrs. Harris stood out because of her remarkable contributions to Justin. She played a major role in the 20th Century Club for more than 20 years, starting in the early 1950s. She also served on the Justin Chamber of Commerce board in 1958. In politics, she won the Democratic Chair for Precinct 22 by a large margin in 1956 and served as an election judge in Justin for over 20 years until 1976.
Most notably, in 1961, she appears to have been the first female City Council member in Justin. She won a close election against Leo Adams, a member of the first city council and later a ten-year mayor.
Mrs. Harris passed away in 1985 and is buried in Justin. Today, as our town names streets and buildings, it’s important to remember the pioneers who shaped our community. Mrs. Harris was one of those people, and her contributions deserve to be honored and remembered.
Let’s Keep Justin Connected
Wishing you a fantastic week ahead—may your days be lucky and bright! Happy St. Patrick’s Day from the Justin Journal.
