Winter Olympians With Texas Roots

Several athletes with Lone Star State connections are headed to the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina (Feb. 6–22, 2026) — and some have ties to North Texas that make them especially exciting to follow:

Hannah Bilka — Women’s Ice Hockey

HISTORY

Remembering Justin’s First Mayor: William Ira Bishop

Our last installment on Justin’s first City Council after incorporation.

Every town has its trailblazers, and William Ira Bishop is one of Justin’s most notable. Born in Waxahachie in 1891, Bishop moved to Justin in 1909 and became a fixture of the community until his passing in 1953.

Bishop met Alma Robinson, and they married on October 19, 1912. Eleven years later, in 1923, they welcomed their daughter, Anna Beth.

In Justin, Bishop wore many hats. He served for years as an election judge, and on the state level, he was president of the Texas Cotton Ginners Association (1941–1942), also serving as a director and executive committee member. But in the hearts of Justin residents, he’s best remembered as the town’s first mayor, holding office for the first seven years after Justin was incorporated.

To honor his legacy, the City of Justin named a park after him — Bishop Park, located at 580 South FM 156 — a place where the community can enjoy the outdoors while remembering one of the town’s earliest leaders.

From leading elections to guiding the newly incorporated city, William Ira Bishop helped shape the foundation of Justin we know today.
