Adam Davenport Mural at Justin Discount Boots
Artist Spotlight: Adam Davenport
Justin is home to an impressive collection of public art by Adam Davenport, a nationally recognized artist whose work spans painting, portraiture, sculpture, and large-scale murals.
Davenport earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from the University of Louisiana at Monroe in 2000. Known for his versatility in realism and portraiture, his work explores the extraordinary qualities found in everyday people and places. Early in his career, he painted the official portrait of Mississippi Governor Kirk Fordice in 1998, now displayed in the Mississippi State Capitol, launching a career that has lasted decades.
His work has been shaped by powerful experiences, including the impact of Hurricane Katrina, which inspired moving landscapes and portraits capturing the human condition. Davenport has also created notable sculptures, including a life-size bronze of Sol Rosenberg in Monroe, Louisiana; a Bill Pickett bronze honoring the historic Black cowboy in Taylor, Texas; and a wildlife bronze of mallards for the Taylor High School football stadium.
Davenport’s art has been acquired by private collectors and museums throughout the South, and in 2025, he was honored with the Knife Fight People’s Choice Award.

LOCAL HISTORY
A Look Back at Justin’s History
Picture this: Christmas morning, December 25, 1883. At 8:00 a.m., the land that would become Justin was still just a patchwork of farms—quiet, rural, and full of possibility. Then something happened that changed everything.
That morning, a first for the area took place: the opening of a general store. John W. Berry unlocked the doors, and with that simple act, the foundation of today’s Justin was laid. What began as a single store soon sparked growth—bringing a doctor’s office, a blacksmith, and even a hotel to this fledgling community. These early businesses became the building blocks of the town we know today.
As the population grew, so did the needs of the people. The Justinites of the day built schools and churches, signaling an important transition—from a loose-knit community of farms to a true town. And it all traced back to that Christmas Day in 1883.
Fast forward to 2015, when the Justin Town Council debated an interesting question: should the year 1883 or 1887 appear under the town’s logo? While 1887 marks the year Justin officially received its name (October 4th—Justin Day), the story clearly begins earlier. The heart of Old Town Justin started beating when that first store opened its doors on Christmas Day, 1883.
As Grace Lee Parr wrote in The Justin Story:
“The general store was an institution in rural life. Farmers came into town for supplies and spent some time with neighbors, exchanging news items and expressing opinions on the state of the union. In winter they gathered around a pot-bellied stove to spin yarn and spit tobacco juice. Many a friendly peal of laughter emanated from the room.”
While we’ve come a long way from pot-bellied stoves and dirt roads, the spirit of Justin hasn’t changed much. We’re still a town where neighbors gather, stories are shared, opinions are voiced—and there’s always room for a little laughter along the way.
